Radiology Department: Conditions, Tests and When to Go

Radiology uses imaging to see inside the body. Radiologists interpret scans and also perform image-guided procedures, helping almost every other department reach a diagnosis.

  • Diagnosis of fractures and lung disease (X-ray)
  • Abdominal and pregnancy imaging (ultrasound)
  • Stroke, injury and cancer imaging (CT)
  • Brain, spine and joint imaging (MRI)
  • Image-guided biopsies and drains
  • Breast screening (mammography)

Common Tests in Radiology

  • X-ray
  • Ultrasound
  • CT scan
  • MRI
  • Mammography
  • Fluoroscopy and interventional procedures

When Should You See a Radiology Specialist?

  • When referred by a doctor for a scan
  • Tell staff if you might be pregnant
  • Mention allergies to contrast dye
  • Bring previous scan reports

Who Works in Radiology?

Radiology teams include radiologists, radiographers and sonographers.

Patient Tip

Ask whether a scan uses radiation and whether ultrasound or MRI is an alternative.

How to Prepare for Your Visit

  • Write down your symptoms, when they started and what makes them better or worse.
  • Bring a list of all medicines and supplements, with doses.
  • Carry previous reports, scans and discharge summaries.
  • Note your questions in advance and, if possible, bring a family member.

Questions to Ask Your Radiology Specialist

  • What is the most likely cause of my symptoms, and what else could it be?
  • Which tests do I need, and what will the results change?
  • What are the benefits and risks of each treatment option, including doing nothing?
  • Which warning signs mean I should return urgently?

Getting Referred

In Pakistan and many other countries, the usual route to a Radiology specialist is through a family physician or general practitioner, who can start tests and write a referral. Large teaching hospitals and specialist centres also run outpatient clinics. In an emergency, go straight to the nearest emergency department.
